Tuning

10 tones in F minor, pentatonic

more info ...

The 10-note Baba Tong from fe eltone is the only wooden slit drum with 2 playing surfaces on the market. The fine work that goes into it is extremely elaborate, the inner workings are sophisticated, the reeds are finely tuned and the way it is played is very pleasant to the touch. The materials are made from the same high-quality precious woods as the larger siblings. We make every effort to process the land and soil resources provided by the trees as completely as possible. The Baba Tong comes with a bag and 2 foam feet so that the drum can also be played on a table.

Playing style

The 10 tones tuned pentatonically in F minor can be played intuitively, so that a kind of random pattern/random melody is created when playing rhythmically, but you can also experiment with sound colors. Playing patterns that please are repeated, from time to time a note breaks out and explores new sound fantasies. The balanced reed pattern of the reeds makes it difficult to recognize the scale straight away, which facilitates intuitive playing.

The arrangement of the playing surfaces of the Baba Tong allows the player to place the instrument between his legs, where it rests securely. Each playing surface is played separately, but also together with the fingers, sometimes here - sometimes there and overlapping. The finger play usually takes place at the beginning of the tongues, only the two very long tongues are played a little further towards the head - new sound, playing and rhythm patterns are waiting to be discovered. Mallets can simply be struck or dribbled rhythmically and clearly one after the other. This means that you let the rubber ball of the mallet bounce on the tongue and hold the handle as if you wanted to stay on the tongue, causing the soft rubber ball to spring back. If you let the feathering glide over several reeds instead of just one, fascinating sound patterns are created which can be combined with the simple striking of the reeds. The drum can also be held in the finger hole and played with one hand using fingers or a mallet.

The Baba Tong slit drums with their special leaf pattern like to communicate with the oldest trees in the forest, their wood and their crowns. Experience the serenity, majesty and unifying nature of the forest, which continuously brings us fresh oxygen in exchange for our breath. With the Baba and Tinka Tongs we have given the slit drums a new joy of playing, lightness and mobility. Almost all playing, melody and rhythm techniques can be played with the Tinka and Baba Tongs. With these light hand drums, I, Ingo Böhme, have fulfilled my wish for slit drums that are struck more with the fingers. They sound soft and gentle and can be combined well with other instruments such as kalimbas, spacedrums or flutes.
