Tenor and bass tounge drums from master craftsmen

Our tenor and bass tounge drums are handmade masterpieces made in Germany. These exceptional instruments are treated organically with hard wax oil to preserve their natural beauty and ensure long-lasting stability and playing pleasure. We have been producing them continuously since 1990.

However, it is not only their high-quality workmanship but also their practical features that make feeltone tenor and bass tounge drums a real highlight. The instruments can be disinfected, which makes them particularly hygienic and ideal for use in therapeutic and educational settings.

Two mallets are included, which are perfectly matched to the drums and enable harmonious playing. There is also a hygrometer to ensure the optimum humidity for the instrument.

It all depends on the tonewood

For the top of our tenor and bass tounge drums, we only use high-quality, air-dried padouk wood, which is otherwise mainly used for professional marimbas. No other wood resonates for so long, as it has excellent vibration properties. Alternatively, we use ash as a tonewood for our tounge drums - this is native to our latitudes and is very similar in quality to padouk. If you would like a bass snare drum made of ash, please ask us, as we do not offer them as standard in our online store. However, the body of all feeltone tenor and bass snare drums is made of sturdy pine. The quality and workmanship of the tonewood are decisive for the sound of feeltone snare drums. For this reason, we select each piece carefully and leave it to dry outdoors for up to four years. If we were to use industrially dried wood instead, the large instruments would be at risk of cracking, especially in dry heating air. Gentle and sustainable drying ensures long-term stability for our bass tounge drums. In addition, feeltone gives you a 2-year guarantee against material defects. Trust in more than 33 years of experience!

    Musical and rhythmic applications

You can play a rhythm on all tounge drums and move it across the tongues to create countless melodic patterns. With the tenor and bass tounge drums from feeltone, you can also do this in the very low sound range. So you can play great bass grooves with many other instruments, adding deep basic rhythms to the sound. There are a variety of touch techniques that you can try out at will. Test for yourself whether you want to stand your snare drum up or lie it down. You can sit in front of it or on it. The instruments can be played with your hands, with mallets, with your fingers and the bass tounge drums can even be played with your fists. However, make sure you only play the four lowest notes in the area of the holes with your fists - i.e. where the tongue begins - otherwise there is a risk of breakage. Our ideas for your playing on the bass tounge drum:

    • with mallets of different lengths and degrees of hardness
    • with the hands or fingers - played like a djembe, conga or frame drum
    • the bass tounge drums are also played with the balls of the hands (fists) at the back of the four lowest tongues - in addition to hand playing
    • play along with the pure wooden surfaces as high slaps
This means that the drums are not only musically enriching, but also allow versatile use in therapy and education. Promote non-verbal communication, accompany role-playing games and motor and haptic exercises. Especially deaf people or those with severe multiple disabilities can benefit from the deep sound of these special instruments.
